Excessive sweating is called by medical experts, Hyperhidrosis. But for you and me it’s called sweating. For about 4% of the world’s population this is a major problem, simply because we sweat too much. The symptoms of Hyperhidrosis can affect many parts of your body including sweaty face, hands, feet and palms. But there are also psychological and social symptoms that can become very difficult to overcome. Just living from day to day with a sweat problem can be very hard for those of us who sweat too much.
This is the medical explanation. You can skip to the next paragraph if you like. There is a part of your brain called the Hypothalamus which is responsible for controlling all sweat related activities. The hypothalamus triggers off the sweat glands through the nerves in your body. When a person gets hot or does some heavy exercise the sweat system will start up and supply sweat to cool you down. Excessive sweating happens when your glands, your nerves or indeed your Hypothalamus is not working correctly. The end result for you is excess sweat.
There are two main types of excessive sweating. Both of them have two names which doesn’t help us at all. The first type is Primary or Focal Hyperhidrosis. This problem is caused by problems in your nervous system which makes your glands in certain parts of your body over react. The main areas of the body to experience excess sweat are the arms, hands, feet and the face. You will often see someone who has this problem do some exercise and their whole face is dripping sweat.
The second type of excess sweating is called Secondary or Generalized Hyperhidrosis. You can probably guess from the name that this is a problem for the whole body. The root causes are usually from long term health conditions such as metabolic disorders or neurological disorders. There are other causes that are not lifelong, such as the menopause.
Well here’s the thing. It is not that easy to treat excess sweating. There are medical and surgical solutions that to me are very drastic indeed. You can reduce the sensitivity of your nerves and glands with electric shocks. You can have Botox injections. You can also have surgery to reduce the glands and nerves in the particular area of your body that sweats too much. I would never use any of these sweat treatments for myself as I do not believe that they are necessary.
You can use anti-perspirants, although I have to say that for me they have the reverse effect and make me sweat more. But anti-perspirants do work for some people. Then you can wear loose clothing and natural fabrics that breathe. Of course the current fashion sense is to wear everything tight. This is no good for sweat problems. The other obvious thing to do is to watch your diet. Eat fewer spicy meals and stop eating processed foods. These will all help you naturally to reduce your sweating.
The thing to do is to look at your treatment holistically and do a number of things together to help you reduce your sweat. Our bodies are complex things with many components. We also have psychological pressures and difficulties that will further complicate treating excessive sweating. For myself I wash once a day and try to keep it to that. If I wash more than that I start to sweat even more. I also eat fresh food almost exclusively. I never eat ready meals and try to limit hot spicy foods.
The main way I look after myself is by planning my life to be as stress free as possible. I try never to do something that puts pressure on me. If I get a phone call saying I should drop everything and do something else I politely say that I can’t. I don’t say why. I do not do things spontaneously because I know this puts me under pressure and I will start sweating too much. I use to run a very busy business that I had to give up because I was always sweating because of the pressure I was under. It was a big step, but my health is more important. You will do well to look at how your life is organised and see where you can reduce stress in your life.
I first wrote about alcohol and sweating about three years ago on this blog. I had a lot of correspondence about it even though I’m not a medical guy. I was just writing from experience. I am now convinced that for adults, alcohol is a major factor in them sweating too much. This is not a popular thing to say in our current wine culture but it is true. The worst culprits seem to be sweet drinks such as white wine and cider. Spirits and dry red wine cause the least amount of sweat for me. A mate of mine says that beer is his problem and he will sweat after only a few sips of beer. The only real cure is complete abstinence or certainly strict limiting of alcoholic consumption. It’s not that much to give up if you can live a normal sweat free life as a result. Is it?

Some diabetic medications have side effects that accompany them, with certain ones being more prominent to some diabetics than others. For some people with Type 2 diabetes, excessive sweating is an unfortunate side effects of their medication.
If your anti-diabetes medication is causing excess sweating you need to talk to your doctor about possibly switching you to something else. This may or may not be a possibility depending on the medication you are currently taking and the level of your disease.
There are things that you can do to offset any excessive sweating. Keeping off excess weight and exercising regularly will help, even if your medication cannot be changed. Drinking plenty of water is another. Avoid skipping meals and especially snacks if they are prescribed, as this puts unnecessary stress on your body.

This research reports a small step that has been taken towards understanding the sweat glands that we all have. It is early days so far but the success that the No Sweat researches have had means that sufferers of excessive sweating such as myself can have some hope for the future.

Some cures for excess sweating can seem a bit desperate. But as you and I know, if you sweat profusely then you are desperate. This article runs through the process used to melt sweat glands under your arms. I am not sure whether this system is for use elsewhere but the ptocess looks transferable.

Living in the UK means that I will not be able to try this out just yet. Still I am not having too bad a time of it at the moment. My standard practices of diet and not overexerting myself still work. The only thing that I find hard to control is the stress aspect. twenty first century living is inherently stressful and I can't escape my share of it anymore than you can.
I completely understand this guy. Nothing seems to stop the continuous flow of excess sweat. It is interesting to read the doctor's take on the causes of sweat and to know that dealing with the problem is not an exact science. I can verify that for myself from personal experience!!

I have spent a life time trying to deal with excess sweat. The only way that I have found to help is a group of measures that I take. Together these measures help but I have to do them all the time and think about them all the time. I regulate my physical activity and my diet to reduce sweat. This is part of my daily life.
It all started with a phone call
This year I had a phone call from my daughter. Nothing unusual about that, she calls all the time. But the content of the call was different.
“Would you like to go on holiday with me this summer?” She asked
I thought about this for a split second and said “yes!” What’s a guy to do? My wife and I were going on holiday with our wonderful daughter. We talked about things for a few minutes and checked the dates which were fine. It was only at the end that I asked.
“Where are we going?” I was stunned to find out that we were going to the Maldives. It was a few days later I began to think about the heat and sweating and would that be a problem.
Sweating problems on a hot holiday island
It turns out that it gets very hot on an island in the Indian Ocean. While we were there the temperature was a minimum of 30 degrees day and night. When we landed in the capital Male the heat hit us like a wall. The heat did not leave until we left on the departing plane. I could see that I was going to have some difficulty with the extreme heat and my sweating problem. Well I was right in some ways and wrong in other ways. I found that if I was reading and sitting out in the sun or the shade there was no difference to my over sweating than when I was in England.
If I decided to go for a walk around the island then there was a problem with my sweating. In fact exercise in 30 degrees will always be a problem for most people with a sweat problem.
Causes of sweat and temperature
So at the risk of stating the obvious. Activity and exercise will cause you to sweat more in hot climates. This particularly true for underarm sweating and facial sweating. For me the rest of my body did not sweat any more. This was true for me but of course you might be different. Now I know that some sufferers will sweat regardless of the climate but for most people it is a trigger. If it’s hot then you sweat more. In the cold we sweat less.
How I survived my holiday in the heat
Well the good thing about our holiday was having access to three swimming pools. So if we went for a walk I always ended up jumping into a pool or the sea to cool off. If I just sat and read or was eating at the restaurant there was no difference to my sweat problem from being at home. I might even go on another holiday in the heat next year.

One of the most common forms of sweating is underarm sweating. This type of sweat problem is often long term. It is not something that comes and goes. Because of this someone who has this type of sweat problem has to look for a long term cure for their sweating problem.
Washing Routines and Sweaty Armpits
People suffering from sweaty armpits need to have a regular washing routine. Many experts say that you should wash as often as you need to to solve the sweat problem. This might work with some people but it is not always the best thing to do. The first thing to be clear about is that washing is completely necessary as part of your cure for sweat. What is not so clear is the best way to go about it.
The first thing to know is that you should be using bacterial soap. This is because most of the sweat odour is the result of bacteria developing in the sweat that you have. Because you are limiting your washing to 2 times per day you should try and make them every 12 hours. Most people wash in the morning which is obviously right. So just wash in the early evening. If you restrict your washing routines in this way your body will usually adjust to the routines and stop sweating so much. It will usually take two to four weeks for you to notice the improvement.
